I. The Simple Past: QKĐ
1) TO BE: was/were.
2) Verb : V-ed/ Vpast
VD:              Vbare                             Vpast
                    go                                   went
                    see                                  saw
                    play                                 played
                    have                               had
                    live                                 lived
                    ...                                     ....
3) Signs (Dấu hiệu của thì QKĐ):
          (1) yesterday (hôm qua), this morning, this afternoon...
          (2) last + time ( last year, last night, last month...)
          (3) time + ago ( 2 days ago, 3 weeks ago, 10 years ago...)
          (4) in + time_past (in the past, in 2018, in 2009)
         (5) when +S + Vpast ... (when I lived in Hue, when I was small)
4) Form (Cấu trúc):
a) To be:
KĐ: S + was/ were .....
PĐ: S + wasn't/weren't....
NV: (Wh) + was/ were + S ....?
         Yes, S + was/were/
         No, S + wasn't/ weren't
Lưu ý:
I/she/he/ it/N + was/wasn't
We/ You/ They/ Ns + were/weren't

b) Verb:
KĐ: S + Vpast .....
PĐ: S + didn't + Vbare....
NV: (Wh) + did + S + Vbare ....?
         Yes, S + did/ No, S + didn't

Exercise: Put the verbs into the simple past tense:
1. They (be) __were ___ at the beach yesterday
2. Last night, she (not, go) _didn't go__ to to party because she (have) __had__ a headache.
3. How you (get) __did you get__ to the cinema yesterday?
4. We (not, see) __didn't see__ her at the festival last night.
5. When I (be) __was__ small, I (have) __had___ a little cat. The cat (be) __was__ very intelligent.
5) Use (Cách dùng):
a) Thì QKĐ dùng để diễn đạt 1 hành động đã xảy ra và đã kết thúc trong quá khứ có dấu hiệu đi kèm (1/2/3/4/5).
b) Dùng để kể lại một chuỗi hành động, sự việc nối tiếp nhau trong quá khứ.
VD: When I (get) __got___ home last night, I (open) __opened__ the door and (turn) __turned___ on the lights, I suddenly (see)__saw___ someone sitting on my bed.
c) Đối với những người đã khuất/ chết thì các hành động của họ đều được chia ở thì QKĐ.
VD: Mozart (compose) __composed___ a lot of songs.
         Alexander Grahma Bell (invent) __invented___ the telephone.
d) Diễn đạt 1 trạng thái trong quá khứ dùng với các động từ: be, feel (cảm thấy), look (nhìn có vẻ), sound (nghe có vẻ), seemed (có vẻ như)...
VD: You (look) ___looked ___ tired this morning. What(happen) ___happened__?

6) Một số cấu trúc sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn:
a)     S + last + Vpast .......... + 1/2/3/4/5
=      The last time + S + Vpast ..... was + 1/2/3/4/5
VD: We last (see) ___saw___ her in 2018.
= The last time we saw her was in 2018.
VD:   The last time I (have) __had__ breakfast in a restaurant with her _was__ last month.
=      I last had breakfast in a restaurant with her was last month.
b) Ai đó đã từng làm gì trong quá khứ.
Form: S + used to +Vbare .....
         S + didn't use to + Vbare.....
VD: I used to walk to school when I was small.
         My mom didn't use to (get) __get__ up late. But now she usually gets up late.
c) Đã từng có gì trong quá khứ:
Form: There used to be + N(s).....
VD: Đã từng có một ngôi đền trong làng tôi nhưng giờ k có nữa.
=> There used to be a temple in my village, but now there isn't.
Lưu ý:
         S + used to + Vbare ..... (ai đó đã từng làm gì)
=      S + no longer + V(s/es).... (ai đó k còn làm gì nữa)
=      S + don't/ doesn't + Vbare .... + any more.(ai đó k còn làm gì nữa)

VD:+ I used to smoke.
=      I no longer smoke.
=      I don't smoke any more.
         + My mother no longer (go) ____ shopping.
=      My mother used to go shopping
=      My mother doesn't go shopping any more.
